Creative Short Story Writing
This introductory course will focus on developing your own narrative voice through examining readings and excerpts from exemplary short story writers such as Australians David Malouf, Tim Winton and Helen Garner as well as the work of Canadian Alice Munro. Each of these award-winning writers has their own distinctive voice and perspective on the world and this is reflected in their characterisation and language use. You will need to set aside some time between sessions to read a short story in preparation for the following class. Your tutor will take you through weekly writing activities to improve your knowledge of the structural elements of short fiction and to stimulate your imagination. The final two weeks will be dedicated to writing your own short story for an adult audience with editorial input from your tutor.
